Ronald McDonald House Tote program needs your help!

The local Ronald McDonald House is looking for tote bag donations from area sewers and quilters.  The finished totes are given to parents staying at either of the 2 Rochester Ronald McDonald houses whose children are seeking medical attention in our area.  This is an ongoing program and the totes are needed year round.

This is a great way to use up some stash fabric to create the finished totes, which need to measure 16" high and 20" long (measurements do not include handles).  Length of handles, pockets, lining, embellishments, pattern and fabric are all your preference, keeping in mind the fabric should be suitable for the adults.

Finished totes may be dropped off at the store.  For more information on the program, contact Linda Wagner at 442-5437 ext 2200.

Remembering Zella...

We are saddened to report the loss of our dear friend and fellow sewing, quilting and embroidery enthusiast, Zella Scheg, who was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer a few years ago.  Even after several surgeries, the latest cutting edge treatments and chemotherapy she ultimately lost her battle with the disease on September 18, 2009 at the very young age of 55.  She is survived by her loving husband, and our dear friend, Mike, and their two sons Terence and Philip.

While enduring her medical nightmare, she was overwhelmed to receive a Comfort Bag through the efforts of Erna's Hope, a local movement to educate women about Ovarian Cancer and raise awareness to the illness.

Zella began volunteering her time throughout her ordeal with Erna's Hope assembling the Comfort bags that she was astonished to be given.  She turned to a friend (Jackie) to set up a place to sell the beaded Ovarian Cancer Awareness bracelets, helping to raise the money needed to make the comfort bags given to newly diagnosed patients.

Zella's final wishes were to have friends and family donate to Erna's Hope to continue her work and to continue raising awareness of the importance of early screening for Ovarian Cancer.  Be sure to check out the bracelets the next time you are in the store.  They cost $8.00 each, payable by cash or check only (checks to be made payable to Erna's Hope, Inc.).  For more information about Erna's Hope or to see how you can help, call Kathleen Stellrecht at (585) 865-6941.

Long Arm Quilting Machine Rental

Rentals started on time as anticipated and are going very well.  Reservations can be made by calling the main phone line (544-4110) during normal business hours.  The rental rate is $15 per hour for machine use which includes instruction and assistance during your rental time.  The rental rate can be split into 1/2 hour increments.  Renters must supply their own fabric, batting and thread.  First time renters should bring 2 yards of scrap fabric (or muslin) to practice (1 yd for top and 1 yd for the backing) with ample batting.  The machines being used for rental are the HandiQuilter HQSixteen machines.  They are lighter in weight to move around, equipped with stitch regulators for consistent, even stitching and set on 10' frames.  The 16" throat of the machine allows you to comfortably quilt a 12" block or pantograph.  Anti-fatigue floor mats are on both sides of the machine, which is located in a separate room in the back of the store with a private bathroom.  Feel free to contact the store for further information.
